Stephen Gallagher is an award winning composer, music editor and sound editor. He works in feature films, commercials, documentaries, short films, theatre, dance and television.
His feature film credits include Music Editor for Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey', (for which he also composed additional source music; 'Blunt The Knives' and 'The Torture Song' ), Music Editor for Neill Blomkamp’s ‘District 9’, Supervising Music Editor for Amy Berg's 'West Of Memphis' and Supervising Music Editor for Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lovely Bones’ for which he composed additional music to accompany Brian Eno's original score.
A winner of four Chapman Tripp Awards for theatre composition and sound design, he has worked with some of New Zealand’s leading theatre practitioners. His most recent theatre composition was the score for the French production, ' L'Ecrivain Public' ('The Letter Writer'), which opened at Theatre 13 in Paris, before playing in the 2010 NZ International Festival of the Arts.
His work for ‘Amazing Extraordinary Friends’ was nominated for Best Sound Design in General Television in the 2009 QANTAS Film and Television Awards. His music has appeared in other award-winning television series including ‘Holly’s Heroes’ and ‘The Insiders’ Guide to Happiness’, which won Best Original Music at the NZ Screen Awards.
He holds an honours degree in Composition from Victoria University of Wellington where he studied under composers John Psathas, Jack Body and Ross Harris.
